These photographs are dedicated to women in theatre starting in 1987 with the infamous, irresistible Drill Hall Panto. Women's Theatre Companies were seizing the moment making the 80s an exciting time for the performing arts. Sheila worked with many of these companies, who created a much needed counter culture, with gutsy names such as Monstrous Regiment, Cunning Stunts, Beryl & the Perils, Spare Tyre, Split Breeches, Hairy Maries, Clean Break, Sensible Footwear, Scarlet Theatre, Hesitate & Demonstrate, and Women's Theatre Group – later Sphinx.

The Museum of the Home, originally known as the Geffrye Museum, is housed in almshouses built in 1714. In 1911 the London County Council bought the buildings and it became a museum of furniture. In the 1930s Molly Harrison developed the museum learning services. Marjorie Quennell, the Museum's curator, created a chronological run of living room displays that were a unique source of learning about the history of domestic life and everyday things. In 2021 the Museum of the Home opened with new galleries and learning spaces, a new cafe, entrance hub and a collections study room.

Maria Bodis-Wollner, Sacha Lehrfreund & Heather McDonough are photographers and artists living in Hackney. The relationship to each other’s work and the local neighbourhood started as a playful conversation and led to an artistic collaboration. Not knowing one another they began to follow each other’s work on Instagram and eventually recognised how they might have been in the same place only moments apart. The three of them became aware of connections in the photographs and encouraged each other to discover lesser known areas of the neighbourhood. That original conversation formed the group Urbanlens3.

An exhibition exploring a fragile relationship to home.
In partnership with Tower Hamlets Local history Library & Archives the Nunnery gallery presents an exhibition across both venues of new work and existing archive material. This is Maria's first UK solo show and explores the fragmentary memory in relationship to a fragile experience of home. The Gallery will be showing five new works:, a limited edition print work – 25 years in the making (and the genesis of living), a film piece, a sound work, a text-based installation and a bespoke paint colour. A memoir of sorts, the print work traces the artists early life living on the Lincoln Estate within walking distance of the Nunnery, a childhood in state care in Bexhill on Sea and consequential experiences in her adult life.
A short bus ride away in Mile End at the Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives you will find an archival display of material that has been integral to the development of the artworks.

Women Writing & Publishing – Discussion with Nilopar Uddin & Reneesha Khan.
Nilopar Uddin is the author of The Halfways, an epic family drama that spans over four decades, moving between London, Wales, New York and Bangladesh. It is a story of mothers and daughters, fathers and daughters, of sisterhood, exploring belonging, family and what makes forgiveness and redemption possible.
Reneesha Khan is a PhD Candidate at the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at Kings College London. Her research focuses on the ways social media is redefining what it means to be a British Muslim woman in the UK today. As a documentary producer Reneesha has made films for the BBC and National Geographic channel and is now co-producing films with her research participants.
Film Screening – Preview of Banglatown by Farihah Chowdhury – a short documentary exploring the dessication of a South Asian London Landmark. Farihah is in her final year at Middlesex University.

This exhibition features over 100 programmes made by campaigners and community groups between 1973 and 1983 including East End Channel One by the Basement Project Film Group, Wages for Housework, Black Teachers. This raw, often inventive television emerged from a fringe department of the BBC – the Community Programme Unit (CPU) and was a serious opportunity for ordinary people to make television. Comprising a vivid social history, it charts the concerns and struggles of a tumultuous decade. The exhibition also includes rare footage from short-lived local cable networks that emerged during the 1970s, produced with skeleton crews, community activists, volunteers and artists. Celebrate the opening of this show by Maria Amidu exploring the history of the Lincoln Estate, with a short documentary film screening at 2.30pm. This show is exhibited across two venues- the Nunnery Gallery, and here at the Local History Library & Archives where the focus is on the architectural and social history of the Lincoln Estate and the artist's brief place within it. From among the extensive collections held in our archives Maria has unearthed Council correspondence, plans, drawings and newspaper cuttings about the Estate- material that has played an integral role in the development of her resulting artworks. A selection of these historic records will be displayed alongside items from Maria's personal archive and accompanied by a timeline documenting the development of the Estate. The exhibition continues a bus ride away at the Nunnery Gallery in Bow with five new artworks – also listed in this programme.

Bringing together 150 paintings by 80 artists from across the globe, this ambitious exhibition celebrates the women artists of mid 20th Century gestural abstraction. The exhibition reveals how these international artists were redefining abstract painting as an area for action, process and politics in the aftermath of the Second World War, endowing gestural abstraction with their own specific cultural contexts – from the rise of fascism in parts of South America and East Asia to the influence of Communism in Eastern Europe and China.

Dr Paula Bartley gives a lecture based on her latest book Women's Activism in 20th Century Britain. Dr Bartley will introduce the class, racial and political range of women's activism. So many of the women activists were very ordinary, not rich, not famous, not influential, yet they effected significant social change. In her talk she will look at the political and racial diversity of women activists, arguing that not all fought for progressive causes, and feminist campaigners who did not always agree on their analysis of injustice. For those that attend in person there will be an opportunity to look at some archives that complement this talk.
