INVENTORY
A photographic
exhibition by SUE ANDREWS, INGRID HESLING, HEATHER McDONOUGH , BETSY
SHNEIDER and images from the collections of the Hackney
Archives and the Whittington Family .
This exhibition
explores childhood in various ways: childhood as seen from the
child; a collection of school photographs, re-making the family
albums.
Childhood,
as viewed from adulthood, is a repository of memories and fantasies.
Too often forgotten is the feeling of powerlessness, the fear
of the unknown and the magic and intensity of childhood. Because
nothing comes before childhood, it is self-encompassing. As a
child it is nearly impossible to imagine that life will be anything
other than what it is at the moment. It is an innocence of time.
As adults we have learnt that time passes for everyone. Time
and the knowledge of it, is what separates us from childhood.
So with photographs we try to defy time: we collect – we document – we
photograph. We try to reclaim what we have lost.

An exhibition
of recent work by artist RUTH BRECKNELL curated
by
Jackie
Remfry.
LIFE'S
WORK
Ruth Brecknell
depicts the miniscule. She makes pictures mainly in oil paint
using flat form and colour to imagine the possibilities of the
tiny hidden world beyond dust. The results are fantastical aerial
landscapes. They relate to the biological and evolutionary journey
we have all made from our humble single cell beginnings. At a
quantum physical level we are made up of infinitesimal particles
from everything and everyone that has previously existed in the
universe. Ruth has never found her own biological family and
psychologically this is probably a strong factor underpinning
her work. She lives and works in Tower Hamlets.

TICS
Women in the workplace 1860-2004
12 February
to 1 May 2004 Curated by Julia Bodenstein
How has women's
presence changed office life from the design of office interiors,
the clothes people wear to work, to the marketing of office technology?
And what has it been like for women working in offices? From
office girl to breaking the glass ceiling, Office Politics takes
a fresh look at the jobs women do and how they have changed.
Once women entered the office through a separate door to men,
now they might take it home with them.
Architectural
plans and drawings make visual the segregated work spaces of
the Victorian era including office gardens and women's living
rooms, whilst blueprints plot hierarchies of the 1960s open plan
office. Company records uncover how threatening and provocative
women's physical presence in the office was seen to be by their
employers and reveal the steps taken to control their appearance.
Using cartoons, careers literature and advertisements, the exhibition
dissects the stereotypes associated with women office workers – the
1920s business girl, the 1960s dolly bird secretary and the power
dressing executive of the 1980s.
Accompanying
the display a website, designed by students from London Metropolitan
University, invites visitors to design their ideal office space.
