photomonth
oct/nov 2003

photomonth takes place in galleries and a wide variety of spaces around East London and the City during October and November 2003.
Originally inspired by Le Mois de la Photo held in Paris each year, the aim of photomonth is to focus on photography as an important art form and a powerful tool of contemporary communication.
Exploring the exhibitions in the East End you will discover how each show widens the perception of photography. Strong themes emerge around contemporary issues, homelessness, the environment, racism, institutions, the labour movement, the struggle for social justice, immigrant life in London and globalisation demonstrations.
Young photographers have been encouraged to show their work and there are opportunities to discuss photography with the artists and participate in workshops.
This year photomonth marks the beginning of a new resource for photographers at Four Corners promoting the divergent cultural and artistic life of East London.

Crowd Control

Recent times have seen a wide variety of occasions when people have come together, united by a common characteristic or cause. From political protests, Jubilee celebrations and festivals around the world to the rush hour commute and the scramble of the summer sales. The twentieth century has seen photography become a means of investigation into human society. A camera, unobtrusive and immediate, can peer into private moments within a throng and capture the poetics of social interaction. This exhibition of images from members of the AOP not only focuses on historical moments which draw the masses, but the before and after effects of gatherings and the relationship between urban space and its inhabitants.

ONE WORLD ONE ENVIRONMENT

One World One Environment is an initiative of the Tower Hamlets Waste Education Project as part of its drive to increase awareness around environmental and waste minimisation issues. Held in the newly built Eco Pavilion in Mile End Park it showcases the environmental concerns of young people from many parts of the world. The initiative builds on the success of ten schools in Tower Hamlets, who last year produced an environmental exhibition called ‘Rubbish’, which highlighted the need to recycle materials and cut down on waste.

As well as highlighting the need for us to change our attitudes towards the environment the exhibition shows the links Tower Hamlets has with the rest of the world.

In partnership with Tower Hamlets Council groups from other countries, including Bangladesh, Guatemala, Somalia and Vietnam make this exhibition truly international. Curated by Phil Maxwell the event is offering free workshops to schools and community groups. To book a workshop call 07932 942 323.

PHIL MAXWELL Comrades
Tony Blair, John Prescott, Gordon Brown, Jack Straw and David Blunkett are a few of the subjects in Phil Maxwell’s latest exhibition. Using his extensive archive of Labour politicians Maxwell examines the broad sweep of New Labour with a critical and humorous eye. Comrades takes the viewer into the heart of the New Labour camp examining personality, policy, ego and ambition whilst allowing us a candid view of the relationship between key members of the Cabinet.

The exhibition explodes the spin around New Labour and compares what the politicians said with what they actually did. Exhaustively researched Comrades takes the Cabinet into the real world and provides a candid and refreshing look at our Westminster rulers. Using a range of different techniques the exhibition will be of particular interest to those interested in pushing the boundaries of both ‘traditional’ and digital technologies.

Phil Maxwell will give a talk about the exhibition at Four Corners on Thursday October 16 starting at 7pm.

STEVE WINNEY Persistent Reoffender
Steve Winney’s latest impeccably produced photographic works continue & deepen his investigation into the accidental beauty he has discovered in graffiti around London’s East End. The focus is on the effects created on street art by the ageing & decaying process and by attempts to eradicate the work. The colours & textures of the backdrop – the free street canvas, be it wall or gate or skip – are as important as those of the materials used to draw or write on it. Winney’s delicate observation of the interactions of these colours & textures producesng of process & subject matter.

Hunter Gatherer
The investigation of boundaries between public and private domains is the focus of this exhibition of four photographers who specialise in the constructed image.

Lindsay Friend's camera observes whilst she undertakes her daily routine, recording the entirety of the performance. The final image reveals a series of events within a single frame. She is giving the viewer the opportunity to enter into her domain. The images produced reveal the residue of an action.

Julian Latorre's work deals with the dynamic of narrative that occurs between the viewer, the subject and the presence of the photographer within the image. His images also allow the viewer to put him or herself in the position of the photographer. Thoughts of how, where, what, why and when start to arise. A story unfolds, imagining how these "characters" play out their roles within their spaces.

Aidan McNeill investigates the process of bathing. Aspects of intimacy, exposure and escapism are associated with the images which are intended to open up new pathways of contemplation through revealing moments that we all share but rarely discuss.

Daniel Whibley searches for the secrets that are to be found amongst the banalities of the city. He returns to the studio to reconstruct parts of the scenes that he witnesses. Thus the transitory is transformed into the permanent. He is observing the world and he is classifying it.

This is the opening show of a new space in the East End. space-twotentwo is a dedicated photographic project and exhibition space.

BEN COLWIN – Lupus Exhibition
The project takes the form of a series of portraits of people with Lupus and is intended to raise the level of awareness about this serious but often overlooked condition. Lupus (S.L.E.) is a chronic debilitating disorder of the immune system and is one of the major medical conditions of the modern age. It causes the immune system to become over active, attacking rather than defending the body and can be life threatening. It is nether neither contagious nor rare, affecting 1 in 750 women in the UK and although there is no cure at present, the majority of cases can be controlled with modern treatment. It mainly affects women but children and men are also affected.

Ben studied Fine Art at Middlesex University and since graduation has worked as a freelance photographer, with commissions regularly appearing in national magazines & newspapers. The project came about from his experience with his late sister Emma, who lived with Lupus for 25 years. The Peabody Trust & The Millennium Awards Fellowship have funded the project.
